Anna-Maria Jakobs (28) has been training under Gilbert Böckmann since October. She was recently extensively interviewed by the Westfalen-Blatt in Bielefeld.

Her victories in the Grand Prix of Nörten-Hardenberg, Mannheim and Münster are among Anna-Maria Jakobs greatest achievements. The beginning of October, she switched to the Böckmann family's training and show stables to further her career. Ms. Lena Brinkmann from the Westfalen-Blatt spoke with the ambitious rider from Warburg.

Ms. Jakobs, show jumping fans in your home town recently watched your rides on TV. How has the indoor season been going for you so far?

Anna-Maria Jakobs:  In November I had already competed in the international indoor shows in Hanover and Oldenburg. At the German Classics, I rode Lausejunge and was the only woman in the Championships of Hanover to reach the jump-off. Unfortunately, we had a little bad luck and a pole fell. But with the fastest four-fault ride, we finished seventh. In the Grand Prix of Hanover we again had one fault. And the same result in the Grand Prix of Oldenburg. But I am not discouraged. A little more fine tuning is needed – and we are working on that now.

You don't have any larger shows on your schedule during the next few weeks. How do you train your horses in the intervals between shows?

Anna-Maria Jakobs: My next big show is in January. So we don't do much jumping while training now. We ride more dressage and try to keep the horses in a good mood.

You now have a new trainer – Gilbert Böckmann – who has been highly successful in national as well as international show jumping competitions and is also the coach of the Australian national team. How did this change come about?

Anna-Maria Jakobs: Training with my earlier trainer, Hans-Thorben Rüder, was very good but after all that time, I just wanted to expand my horizon. The switch was made in agreement with Thorben. I moved with my horses to Lastrup near Cloppenburg where Gilbert Böckmann runs a large training and show stable.

What's it like with your new trainer?

Anna-Maria Jakobs: Gilbert Böckmann is unbelievably tranquil when he trains. He has an eye for detail and sees even the smallest errors. I feel that my horses and I are in very good hands in Cloppenburg.

You've been quite successful with Lausejunge for many years. What are the prospects for your young horses?

Anna-Maria Jakobs: Lausi will be 16 years old next year and I hope that he can continue to compete at this level for one or two more years. He's fit and really enjoys jumping. Along with Lausejunge I have also been competing with La Cueva and Credo at large shows. They are now eight and nine years old respectively – which means they are no longer youngsters. Next year I will ride both of them in the medium tour. I am confident that they will do their job there just as well as they did in the youngster tour.

The year is nearly over. What was the outcome in 2010?

Anna-Maria Jakobs: It would have been difficult to top my achievements in 2009. I had several good placings this year but there weren't any great highlights.

What are your goals for the indoor season?

Anna-Maria Jakobs: My next big show is scheduled in Münster from January 5-9, 2011. For us Westphalian riders, this show is a real highlight in the indoor season. Whether I will be permitted to ride in the large tour in Dortmund will depend on our national trainer. Otto Becker makes this decision four weeks before the respective show.
